Three major mobile network operators in Egypt announced providing free calls and text messages to and from Morocco to allow their customers to contact family and friends in quake-hit Morocco.
Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, and Etisalat Misr announced in three separate statements, according to the “Ahram Online” website.
Vodafone said its offer is effective from 10 September to the next three days. Likewise, Orange’s initiative will commence on Monday and extend for three days.
Etisalat offered its customers in Morocco free calls to Egypt for one week.
The 6.8 magnitude earthquake, which struck late on Friday and was followed by a 4.9 aftershock, killed more than 1,300 people and left around 800 others in critical condition.
According to a statement released by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Saturday, no casualties have been reported yet among Egyptian expats in Morocco.
The quake hit the High Atlas Mountains, southwest of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km, causing widespread damage.
Rescue operations in search of survivors are still ongoing.
