Haya Khairat, 1st Egyptian Filmmaker To Receive Cannes Angénieux Special Encouragement Award

The Angénieux Special Encouragement Award 2023 will be awarded to Egyptian director Haya Khairat at the Cannes Film Festival. She is going to be the first Egyptian and Arab woman to be given this award.

This award is tailored to honor rising talents in the cinema industry.

The award ceremony for the Angénieux Special Encouragement Award will be held on Friday, May 26, at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

In an Instagram post, she said: “Grateful, happy and humbled beyond words to be selected for an Angénieux encouragement award this year alongside the great DOP Barry Ackroyd taking place at the Festival de Cannes.”

Khairat made her cinematography debut in 2019 with the short film, Dark Chocolate, which received the Audience Award for Best Short Film Award at the Cairo International Film Festival. She was also awarded the Silver Lynx at the Dubai Lynx Awards in 2020 for the work she performed as a director and director of photography for the Zero Tolerance Ribbon FGM campaign.
