US automaker Tesla delivered 77,695 China-made electric vehicles (EVs) in May, data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed on Monday, Jun 5th.
That represented a 2.4% surge from April, recording sales of 75,842 locally made Models 3 and Y in the world’s largest auto market. Yearly, sales rose 142% in May from 32,165 vehicles during the respective period of 2022.
On the other hand, Musk concluded a two-day trip to China on Thursday, during which he held talks with Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang on Wednesday in Beijing.
The trip came as Tesla faces competition from Chinese-made EV makers and uncertainty in terms of expanding its Shanghai plant, the largest production hub owned by the company.
On May 29, Tesla started distributing over-the-air software updates for more than 1.1 million vehicles for a braking issue. Accordingly, Tesla announced price hikes in several countries in May, including China.
