Egypt Launches Interactive Platform to Track Sustainable Development Goals Across Governorates

Mona Yousef

In a major step toward data-driven policymaking and localized development, Egypt’s Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation has officially launched the “Governorates’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Data Platform”, a digital tool that offers real-time insights into the country’s progress toward the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda at the governorate level.

The announcement was made by Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, who described the platform as an extension of the government’s ongoing efforts to institutionalize evidence-based decision-making and promote transparency in public investment and policy.

A Groundbreaking Tool for Localized SDG Monitoring

The new interactive platform provides a comprehensive view of sustainable development progress across Egypt’s 27 governorates, detailing performance on each of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their associated indicators. The platform allows stakeholders to access up-to-date, governorate-specific data, facilitating tailored development strategies and resource allocation.

“This platform empowers us to clearly track the progress of each governorate, identify key challenges, and guide targeted investments,” said Dr. Al-Mashat. “It marks a turning point in ensuring equitable, data-driven development in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030.”

Methodologies Aligned with International Standards

The platform’s analytical framework is built on internationally recognized methodologies, including those of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It enables objective performance measurement, allowing fair comparisons and benchmarking among governorates.

Three primary indicators drive the evaluation model:

  1. Distance to 2030 Target – Measuring the gap between each governorate’s current performance and its 2030 development goals, in collaboration with the Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research (Baseera).
  2. Annual Targeted Change Rate – Reflecting the annual percentage change required—positive or negative—for a governorate to stay on track toward meeting its SDG targets.
  3. Relative Ranking – Comparing the performance of all 27 governorates to provide a national performance hierarchy for each indicator.

Integration with National Development Strategy

The platform complements Egypt’s prior efforts to localize SDGs, including two earlier localization reports—one issued in 2021 with the UNFPA, and another in early 2025 in collaboration with the UNDP. Data for the platform is sourced from a wide range of official institutions, notably the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

The tool also integrates with broader efforts to govern public investments and monitor development finance at the governorate level, ensuring smarter allocation and impact-driven planning.
