PwC Middle East Survey: : Alternative Work Models For Saudi Women Reentering Workforce

News Agencies

A recent PwC Middle East survey titled “Navigating the Path Back: Women Returners in KSA” reveals that alternative work models are critical for empowering Saudi women to re-enter the workforce.

The survey found that over half (55%) of Saudi women surveyed had taken career breaks, exceeding the MENA region’s average. However, only 40% planned to return, falling below the regional average. This highlights the need for supportive structures to ease reintegration.

The report emphasizes the importance of returnship programs, which offer structured pathways with training and support, to help women overcome challenges. Significantly, 83% of Saudi women consider these programs valuable for a successful comeback.

The desire for financial independence is a key motivator for Saudi women to return, with 42% citing it compared to 38% in the MENA region. Caregiving responsibilities, including prioritizing their own mental and physical well-being, were also identified as reasons for career breaks.

The survey underlines the importance of inclusive workplaces that offer alternative work models. Riyadh Al Najjar, Chairman of PwC Middle East, emphasizes that Saudi Arabia’s female labor force has doubled since 2017, reaching 36%. Maintaining this growth requires inclusive practices to reintegrate women and utilize this experienced talent pool.

Norma Taki, PwC Middle East leader, stresses the need for a supportive workplace culture that empowers women to take breaks and return valued upon their comeback. The survey suggests that offering alternative work models and improved childcare benefits can significantly boost women’s return, potentially adding US$385 billion to the MENA region’s economy.

The survey underscores the importance of creating inclusive workplaces with alternative work models to empower Saudi women and leverage their skills for the country’s economic development. By embracing these strategies, Saudi employers can tap into a highly motivated and experienced talent pool, paving the way for a more prosperous future.
