US Ambassador Highlights $3.6 Billion Investment in Egypt’s Water and Sanitation Infrastructure
NCW, UN Women, Canadian officials meet the inspiring women of ‘Rabeha’ program
Jacqueline Azer, Governor of Beheira, welcomed Canada’s Ambassador-Designate to Egypt, Ulric Shannon, and a delegation from Global Affairs Canada and the UN. The group visited Misr Public Library in Damanhour to meet with participants of the Canadian-funded “Rabeha” program.
The visit aimed to strengthen international cooperation supporting Egyptian women, highlighting successful stories of female entrepreneurship and economic empowerment aligned with the SDGs and Egypt’s Vision 2030.
The “Rabeha” program, a joint initiative of UNIDO and UN Women Egypt, is funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented in partnership with the National Council for Women, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, and the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency. The program seeks to empower at least 6,300 Egyptian women by expanding their access to employment and self-employment opportunities.
The delegation, which included representatives from Global Affairs Canada, UN Women, UNIDO, and the National Council for Women, visited Beheira Governorate to meet with Rabeha program participants. The visit aimed to strengthen international cooperation and highlight the achievements of Egyptian women, particularly in the agricultural and industrial sectors.
According to Daily News Egypt, Governor Azer emphasized the importance of the visit and the potential for women’s economic empowerment in Beheira, a province known for its agricultural and industrial sectors. She highlighted the success of the Rabeha program and expressed interest in replicating similar initiatives.
Ambassador Shannon expressed his pleasure at visiting Beheira and meeting with the Rabeha program’s beneficiaries. He emphasized the importance of women’s economic empowerment and the Rabeha program’s positive impact on Egyptian women’s lives.
Egypt’s State-Owned, El Nasr Automotive, Resumes Production After 15-Year Pause
Egypt’s state-run automaker, El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Company, has officially resumed manufacturing after a 15-year halt, as confirmed by the Egyptian cabinet.
At a ceremony commemorating this significant milestone, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stated that the return of El Nasr is “a strategic decision by the state,” emphasizing the importance of private-sector partnerships in moving major projects forward.
Osama Aboul-Magd, head of the Egyptian Automotive Dealers Association, stressed the importance of the company’s reopening to enhance industrial localization.
“This will help save the foreign currency needed for relevant imports, provide job opportunities, increase the employment rate, and lead to exporting vehicles manufactured in Egypt,” He told Egypt Today.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly attended a ceremony at the company’s Helwan facility to celebrate the restart of production and highlight ongoing development projects aimed at restoring the company’s prominence in the automotive sector.
Key officials, including Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development Kamel El-Wazir and Ministers of Public Business Sector, Environment, Electricity, and Renewable Energy, attended the event.
Ambassadors, parliamentarians, and business leaders also participated.
During the ceremony, attendees viewed a documentary highlighting the company’s history and its path to recovery as a cornerstone of Egypt’s industrial sector.
Managing Director of El Nasr Automotive Company Khaled Shedid outlined the company’s vision to reintroduce its facilities into production, diversify product offerings—including light transport vehicles and electric tuk-tuks—and optimize logistics operations.
A major highlight of the event was the signing of a contract to establish a joint-stock company between El Nasr Automotive, Singaporean-Taiwanese firm Tron-e, and Emirati company Your Transit.
The collaboration aims to produce Egypt’s first electric minibus, with a capacity of 24 passengers, targeting urban and tourism markets. The production is set to begin mid-2025, with an initial capacity of 300 buses annually, scaling to 1,500 by 2027.
The project also includes the establishment of an electric battery production line.
IFE inked Two Grants with Al Rofayda Hospital, Luna Cosmetics to Support Women
The Facility Investing for Employment (IFE) announced signing two grant agreements with Al Rofayda Hospital for Women and Children and Luna for Perfumes and Cosmetics.
This cooperation will create 1,308 job opportunities, with women filling nearly half of the positions. This supports Egypt’s efforts to empower women economically while enhancing their societal role.
During the signing ceremony, Mr. Steffen Kuhl, Managing Director of the Facility Investing for Employment (IFE), commented, “Egypt has a vast human resource, and therefore, the initiative works on creating new job opportunities and supporting the localization of industries, especially with the rapid growth of the Egyptian market.” He further noted that investing in human capital helps bridge the gap between the growing population and the evolving market needs, improving both the quality of work and employee conditions, in addition to empowering Egyptian women and emphasizing their role in social development.
Kuhl also explained that the total grant agreements signed are worth €8.56 million, aimed at creating 1,308 new jobs, including 857 jobs at Rofayda Hospital and 451 at Luna Perfumes and Cosmetics, knowing that women will occupy 50% of the jobs.
Rofayda Hospital’s project will involve a significant expansion, introducing specialized departments, including a pediatric department equipped with the latest technologies for treating heart, neurological, and urological diseases. Other planned facilities include a comprehensive reconstructive surgery department, a fully equipped rehabilitation center, and a department for treating cerebral palsy. Meanwhile, Luna intends to build a new logistics hub in the Giza governorate, with plans to expand its operations throughout Egypt after achieving considerable success in Cairo and Alexandria. This aligns with state strategies to support local production.
The Facility Investing for Employment (IFE) is an investment mechanism created by KfW Development Bank on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development (BMZ) as an integral part of the Special Initiative on Training and Job Creation “Decent Jobs for a Just Transition” Operating under the brand “Invest for Jobs”, the Facility aims to remove investment barriers that prevent the creation of new and better jobs in the private sector in its partner countries in Africa: Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Morocco, Rwanda, Senegal, and Tunisia.
The Ministry of Social Solidarity Unveils Egypt’s First Comprehensive Education Centre for Children with Special Needs
The Ministry of Social Solidarity announced establishing Egypt’s first comprehensive education centre for children with special needs and disabilities, in cooperation with the Administrative Capital for Urban Development (ACUD), and Cavendish Company, a provider of special needs education.
The initiative, which will launch at the New Administrative Capital, is expected to expand to other governorates. Its goal is to promote the inclusion of individuals with disabilities into society by providing equal opportunities through a specialised education system.
During a meeting at the Ministry of Social Solidarity’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, key stakeholders discussed the provision of training, technical support, and human resources for the proposed centre. The Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW) actively participated in the OECD Forum on “Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Middle East and North Africa,” held in Cairo, Egypt.
Led by JNCW Secretary-General Maha Ali and Ambassador Amjad Adayleh, the Jordanian delegation joined eight Arab countries in launching a project aimed at enhancing financial inclusion for women’s entrepreneurship and access to financing.
In a statement released on Saturday, Ali emphasized Jordan’s commitment to women’s economic empowerment as a national priority, aligning with King Abdullah II’s vision of political and economic modernization. She highlighted the importance of empowering women and increasing their active participation in public life, referencing the Kingdom’s Women’s Empowerment Strategy within the Economic Modernization Vision.
JNCW has undertaken several initiatives to boost women’s economic participation, including legislative reforms, creating supportive workplaces, and encouraging entrepreneurship. The National Women’s Strategy (2020-2025) prioritizes economic empowerment as a cornerstone of women’s active participation in public, political, and social life.
Furthermore, the National Financial Inclusion Strategy (2023-2028) aims to increase women’s access to financial services and reduce the gender gap, a significant challenge for women business owners.
