The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) won a seat in the 37-member Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organization for the first time in 20 years.
Egypt’s tenure will last till 2027, as stated by the Ministry of Civil Aviation – to which the EMA is subordinate.
The EMA was elected to the position during elections held on Thursday during the 19th World Meteorological Congress (Cg-19) in Geneva.
At the same time, the UAE was elected to the presidency of the WMO, while India, Ireland, and Cote d’Ivoire were elected as vice presidents.
Accordingly, Egypt will be able to take part in decision-making inside the WMO and maintain Egypt’s strategic interests in the field of weather and water at the international level, the civil aviation ministry.
Civil Aviation Minister, Mohamed Abbas Helmy, lauded this achievement for the Egyptian government amid its ongoing efforts to boost the civil aviation industry.
“The achievement was the result of the EMA’s unwavering efforts recently, including fruitful cooperation and continuous coordination with WMO, particularly during the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) held in Sharm El-Sheikh last year.”, the minister said.
This achievement was also made possible by mobilizing the support of member states during meetings held at the Arab Summit last May. This confirms Egypt’s pioneering role and distinguished position at the regional level, Helmy added.
