Egypt’s Culture Minister, Jehan Zaki, has appointed veteran broadcaster Amr El-Leithy to chair the Media Committee at the Supreme Council of Culture, unveiling a panel that places a clear emphasis on female leadership within the country’s media and cultural institutions.

El-Leithy’s appointment brings an experienced media executive to a role that helps shape national media priorities and cultural dialogue. At the same time, the composition of the committee reflects a more deliberate effort to elevate women into positions of influence within a space historically dominated by male leadership.

Among the most prominent members is Dr. Suzanne El-Qalini, a member of the National Council for Women and a longstanding voice in media development. Her presence signals closer alignment between cultural policy and questions of representation. She is joined by Omayma Shoukry, who leads the radio sector at United Media Services and Radio Masr, and Amal Mabdy, whose advocacy for people with disabilities adds a broader dimension of inclusion to the committee’s work.

The panel also includes senior figures from across Egypt’s media and regulatory landscape, such as Tarek Saada, Essam El-Amir, Amb. Alaa Youssef, and Ahmed Kamal, Chairman and Editor in Chief of the Middle East News Agency, alongside leading editors, broadcasters, and academics.

Taken together, the appointments suggest a more intentional approach to representation at the policy level, particularly as Egypt navigates a rapidly evolving media environment shaped by digital expansion and shifting audience expectations.

Still, it is the stronger presence of women iThe committee is expected to begin outlining its priorities in the coming period, with attention likely to focus on how effectively it can translate its diverse makeup into practical initiatives that resonate across both traditional and digital media platforms.
