UN Tourism Empowers Women in Tech: 2nd Edition of Women in Tech Startup Competition Launches in the Middle East

UN Tourism has announced an epic return of the Women in Tech Startup Competition in the Middle East, in its second edition. This initiative shines a light on and supports female entrepreneurs who are shaping the future of sustainable tourism and technology across the region.

The second edition builds on the tremendous success of the inaugural edition. The first edition attracted over 140 startups and SMEs from 11 Middle Eastern countries. Last year’s winners: Fosha (Egypt), Sparkle Haze (UAE), Plastus Biotech (Saudi Arabia), and Xenios Academy (UAE) were honored  during World Tourism Day celebrations in Riyadh.

Calling All Women-Led Tech Startups in the Middle East

The competition seeks applications from innovative startups led by women and based in the Middle East. Participating businesses must operate within the tourism sector or related industries and offer sustainable solutions that benefit people, the planet, and economic prosperity. Startups can be in their early stages, at the idea stage, or in Series A funding.

In the upcoming edition, UN Tourism has partnered with leading global and regional organizations to support the winning startups. Partners like Almosafer, Plug and Play, AIM, The Bench, Impulse4Women, and Bilakatu will offer valuable resources. They will contribute to increased visibility, personalized mentorship, expert consultations, and potential investment opportunities for the most promising ventures. This year, applications will be processed through Plug and Play’s globally acclaimed open innovation platform. Additionally, finalists gain access to the UN Tourism Innovation Network.

UN Tourism: Championing Gender Equality and Innovation

UN Tourism remains dedicated to amplifying tourism’s positive impact on women’s lives, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality. Thus, the organization actively supports women entrepreneurs, driving progress in the tourism sector and promoting inclusivity.

In this regard,  “Empowering female entrepreneurs in the Middle East with innovative business ideas that prioritize social impact . Environmental sustainability is crucial for the sustainable development of the region’s thriving tourism sector.”, said  UN Tourism Executive Director,  Natalia Bayona.

Since 2018, UN Tourism has spearheaded over 25 startup competitions in more than 150 countries, receiving over 20,000 participants and more than 350 top startups, and securing over $2 billion funds. UN Tourism remains committed to fostering digitalization and innovation, ultimately contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By promoting sustainable tourism practices, UN Tourism recognizes tourism as a powerful tool for positive transformation and inclusive economic development.
