Chairperson of the National Council for Women Maya Morsy held a meeting with a Gambian delegation, currently visiting Egypt, to stand on Egypt’s efforts in the field of female genital mutilation (FGM) and means of spreading awareness about the importance of halting such harmful practice.
During the meeting, Morsy reviewed Egypt’s efforts to confront FMG from 2000 until 2024 through raising social awareness and enacting laws to confront this crime.
She noted that the FMG rate among girls ages 0-19 went down by 14% in 2021 compared to 21% in 2014, according to a survey conducted by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
Morsy added that the number of those expected to undergo FMG decreased to 27% in 2021, compared to 56% in 2014, which is a great achievement in this domain.
