NCW Forms Committee to Monitor Women’s Image Presented in Ramadan Drama 2023

The National Council for Women announced the formation of a committee to monitor the image of women presented in drama series shown during the month of Ramadan 2023.

President of the National Council for Women, Dr. Maya Morsi, emphasized that drama makers have a societal responsibility towards future generations and history. This responsibility lies in the hands of all those in charge, including authors, directors, actors, and producers, who have the upper hand in monitoring what is shown on screens, through the selection of roles and topics that are purposeful and not only profitable.

In turn, Dr. Suzan El-Keliny, member of the council and rapporteur of the media committee, stated that the committee, which consists of media professionals and Media Professors at Egyptian universities, in addition to a large group of volunteer students from media faculties and departments, will monitor Ramadan dramas this year, with special focus on the image of women in dramas, advertisements, and programs presented during the holy month of Ramadan, in addition to radio and television programs.

She added: The monitoring process will be carried out this year on several levels. The first is to monitor drama series, where 250 male and female media students, to monitor the image of women in the 38 series airing on government and private satellite channels and platforms. The second level is monitoring the image of women in advertisements

TV programs, news websites, and newspapers. And the final level is monitoring the image of women on Egyptian radio. 

Monitoring will take place daily during the month of Ramadan, with attention to preparing a quantitative and qualitative content analysis to come up with a report on the media representation of women, adding that a comparison will be prepared of what’s presented with the media code to address women’s issues, prepared by the Information Committee of the Council, to come up with indicators that will be announced in the various media, after the holy month of Ramadan.

The committee will announce the initial indicators during the second half of Ramadan, and the final report will be announced after Eid Al-Fitr.
