In an upcoming biopic, Selena Gomez is set to portray music legend Linda Ronstadt. Gomez teased the role on Instagram by posting a photo of Ronstadt’s 2013 memoir “Simple Dreams” on her story.
The music biopic is currently in development, with producers including Ronstadt’s manager, John Boylan, and James Keach, producer of the 2019 documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice.” Other casting is yet to be announced.
Ronstadt is a famed country, rock ‘n’ roll, and Latin music icon, with her albums “Heart Like a Wheel” and “Simple Dreams” from the 1970s achieving critical and commercial success and revealing her versatility across genres.
Throughout her career, she has received 11 Grammy Awards and Lifetime Achievement Awards from both the Recording Academy and the Latin Recording Academy.
Ronstadt announced her retirement in 2011, later revealing that she was unable to sing due to progressive supranuclear palsy, which was initially misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s disease.
It is worth mentioning that Gomez rose to prominence as an actress on Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” and as a singer with hits such as “Lose You to Love Me” and “Love You Like a Love Song.”
Both Ronstadt and Gomez are of Mexican descent. The latter has received two Golden Globe nominations for her performance in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” which she executive produces and stars in alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short.
Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman directed Ronstadt’s 2019 documentary, chronicling her nearly five-decade career and dominance of the country-rock genre.
