Egypt presently homes approximately nine million migrants and refugees, accounting for 8% of the country’s population, according to Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly in a conference speech on July 23.

Madbouly’s figure comes as a result of his presence at the International Conference on Development and Migration in Rome.

“These individuals receive equal access to essential services provided by the government in education and healthcare and freedom of movement,” reads an official government social media statement reporting the speech.

The most current data also shows a 50% rise in migration to Egypt since 2018, owing mostly to the new flood of Sudanese refugees fleeing the continuing violence.
