Egypt has secured the 22nd position among 63 countries in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2024, according to a statement by the Egyptian Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC). The country achieved a score of 61.8 points, placing second in the Middle East and North Africa region, following Morocco.

The CCPI, issued by the German Watch corporation, highlighted Egypt’s efforts in expanding investments in renewable energy projects, with a particular emphasis on promoting the use of solar and wind energies. The index also acknowledged Egypt’s increased investments in fossil fuels, specifically fossil gas.

While Denmark secured the top position in the index, no country attained the overall “very high” ranking. As a result, the first three ranks in the overall ranking remained vacant. Estonia claimed the fifth spot, followed by the Philippines in sixth place, as reported on the climate index’s website.

Egypt has made significant adjustments in its emissions reduction targets, primarily in the power sector. The country aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 65 percent from oil and gas, 33% in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, and 7% in the transport sector, all compared to the baseline levels set for 2030.

The CCPI, published annually since 2005, serves as an independent monitoring tool to assess the climate protection performance of countries and the European Union (EU). Its objective is to increase transparency in international climate politics and facilitate comparisons of climate protection efforts and progress made by individual nations.
