BUE Honored for Solar-Powered Water Desalination Innovation in South Sinai

Mona Yousef

The British University in Egypt (BUE) has been recognized by  Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Egypt’s Minister of Environment, for its groundbreaking work in sustainable water solutions. The university’s solar-powered water desalination unit, installed in the Nabq Protectorate in South Sinai, was awarded as a model of environmental innovation and social impact.

Recognition of Excellence in Green Innovation

The award was presented during a ceremony attended by prominent national and international figures, including the Governor of South Sinai and Mr. Alessandro Fracassetti, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Egypt. Receiving the award on behalf of BUE was Professor Yehia Bahei El Din, Vice President for Research and Projects.

A Sustainable Model for Remote Communities

Developed by BUE’s Research & Development and Projects Unit, the solar-powered desalination system addresses the critical need for clean drinking water in remote and ecologically sensitive regions. Powered entirely by solar energy, the unit provides a sustainable, low-carbon alternative to traditional water sources, offering a scalable model for similar environments across Egypt and the wider region.

National and Global Significance

Located in the ecologically rich Nabq Protected Area, BUE’s project directly supports Egypt’s Vision 2030, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and national climate resilience strategies. It also aligns with ongoing UNDP initiatives to empower communities through sustainable infrastructure. Accordingly, it addresses water scarcity in off-grid regions, protects biodiversity in protected areas, and enhances Egypt’s green innovation leadership.
