In a landmark move to advance Egypt’s position on the global squash stage, Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, held a high-level meeting with Eng. Amna El-Trabelsi, President of the Egyptian Squash Federation, and key members of the federation’s technical committee. The meeting, which focused on Egypt’s strategic preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, signals a new chapter for squash following its historic inclusion in the Olympic program.

Strategic Planning for a Historic Olympic Debut

The gathering brought together the crème de la crème of Egyptian squash, including former world number one and current Olympic Program Director Karim Darwish, reigning world champions Nour El Sherbini and Ali Farag, and technical advisor Hisham El Atar. Their presence underscored the federation’s commitment to leveraging Egypt’s world-class talent to secure Olympic medals.

“With squash finally making its Olympic debut in Los Angeles 2028, Egypt’s chances of clinching Olympic medals have transformed from ambition into a very real possibility,” Dr. Sobhy stated. “We are optimistic about what lies ahead for our national team and fully confident in the abilities of our federation and our exceptional athletes—both men and women.”

Reviving the National Squash Development Project

In a forward-looking declaration, the Minister announced the relaunch of Egypt’s National Squash Development Project. The initiative, designed to broaden the sport’s reach across socioeconomic backgrounds, aims to nurture grassroots talent while ensuring sustainability and inclusivity within the squash ecosystem.

“We are not only preparing for Olympic podiums—we are investing in the future of squash as a sport for all Egyptians,” Sobhy affirmed. “By reviving this national project, we aim to cultivate new generations of champions and embed squash into the fabric of Egyptian society.”

Holistic Approach to High-performance Sport Management

The Egyptian Squash Federation’s technical committee, established earlier this year, plays a pivotal role in aligning the vision of the federation with the aspirations of its athletes. Acting as a liaison between players and administrators, the committee ensures a responsive and holistic approach to high-performance sport management.

“Our role is to support our athletes not only technically but also logistically and emotionally, ensuring every need is met as we build toward the Olympic dream,” said Karim Darwish during the session.

Egypt: A Squash Powerhouse

Egypt has long dominated the international squash scene, producing a continuous stream of world champions and securing its status as a global powerhouse in the sport. The inclusion of squash in the Olympic Games is seen by many as long overdue, and for Egypt, it represents a golden opportunity to translate decades of dominance into Olympic success.

With just three years to go until LA 2028, the collaborative spirit between the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Egyptian Squash Federation, and its elite athletes is expected to yield not only podium finishes but also a lasting legacy for squash development in Egypt.
