Vodafone Egypt: The First Telecom Company to Achieve the LEED Gold Green Certification

Vodafone Egypt, the largest mobile network company in Egypt, has taken the lead in achieving LEED Gold Green certification for its main building “Operation and Maintenance” department in the Smart Village.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, commonly known as LEED, is a set of rating systems for evaluating the design and environmental performance of buildings, homes, and neighborhoods. LEED is the most exclusive green building classification system to be used worldwide, as it covers construction of all types.

The infamous telecom company was keen on meeting the global standards for sustainability, building green cities, as well as saving energy. As a result, it is now among the first entities to receive this certificate in the telecommunications sector after implementing its LEED systems to attain sustainability and construct eco-friendly buildings.

CEO of Vodafone Egypt, Mohamed Abdallah, expressed his pride in the company for becoming the first recipient of the LEED Gold Green certification, continuing that the board of directors is well aware of the urgency to preserve the environment, and establish an integrated work system that’s main concern is to rationalization the use of energy.

He pointed out that this certificate serves as proof of the company’s continuous efforts to promote the efficient usage of energy and eliminate the impacts of climate change in line with COP27’s primary purpose.

Abdallah also added that Vodafone is one of the first companies to prioritize the reduction of carbon emissions for its operations by 2030, maintain zero carbon emissions by 2040, as well as complete ongoing support of the Egypt National Climate Change Strategy (NCCS) 2050”.

Additionally, the company aims to become the leading mobile network company to operate with green technology, compatible with 100% environmental preservation within the near future. This step will upgrade the living standards and quality of life for Egyptian citizens through a unified and sustainable environmental system.

Notably, Vodafone has a track record of distinguished certificates that conveys environmental preservation and climate change. It was the first recipient of the ISO 50001 certification for its energy management system last February, making it one of the first companies working in the telecom sector in Africa and the Middle East to earn this certificate for applying the best systems in energy management and rationalization.

In 2018, Vodafone also received a prestigious award from the Energy Efficiency Initiative held by the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the UN Development Program, and the American Chamber of Commerce for implementing a project that limits electricity consumption.
