UN Women Egypt played an active role in a high-level regional conference focused on accelerating action to end violence against women and girls, as Arab states reviewed progress toward the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 30 years after its adoption.
The conference, titled “From Pledge to Action: Beijing +30 Review Commitments in the Arab States—Sharing Knowledge on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls,” took place in Amman on December 8–9, 2025. It was organized by the UN Women Regional Office for the Arab States in partnership with the Government of Jordan, under the Ajyal Egalité program—an initiative funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) to promote gender equality in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.
Egypt Showcases Legislative and Policy Advances
Throughout the two-day event, the Egyptian delegation contributed extensively to discussions, highlighting Egypt’s national achievements in legislation, service provision, research, and data systems aimed at eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls.
Participants included regional experts, policymakers, and government representatives who convened to exchange best practices, strengthen cross-country cooperation, and accelerate progress toward fulfilling international and regional commitments on women’s rights.
Addressing the Data Gap on Violence Against Women
Dr. Salma Nasser, Programme Specialist at the UN Women Egypt Country Office, moderated a key session titled “The Data Gap: Collecting and Using Administrative Data and Research on Violence Against Women and Girls through Innovative Tools.” The session focused on closing persistent data gaps, strengthening administrative data systems, improving coordination across sectors, and promoting innovative tools to support evidence-based policymaking at the national level.
The discussion underscored the critical role of reliable data in designing effective prevention and response strategies to combat gender-based violence.
Egypt’s Legal Reforms Since 2014 in Focus
NCW’s Director of the Women’s Complaints Office, Ms. Amal Tawfik, participated in multiple panels during the conference. She shared key lessons learned from Egypt’s experience in translating Beijing commitments into enforceable national legislation.
Tawfik presented an overview of the evolution of Egypt’s legal framework on violence against women, highlighting major reforms implemented since the adoption of the 2014 Constitution. Her intervention emphasized the importance of aligning constitutional principles with laws, services, and institutional mechanisms that protect women’s rights and access to justice.
Regional Momentum Toward Beijing +30
The conference marked a critical milestone in the Beijing +30 review process in the Arab region, reinforcing the need to move from commitments to concrete action. UN Women Egypt’s participation reflected the country’s ongoing engagement in regional and international efforts to combat violence against women and girls through stronger laws, better data, and coordinated multi-sectoral responses.
