UN Security Council Demands Ceasefire in Gaza During Ramadan, Egypt Applauds

In a move welcomed by Egypt, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution on March 25th, 2024, demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the holy month of Ramadan. This is the first ceasefire resolution for Gaza since the conflict began in October 2023.

The resolution, which applies to the remaining two weeks of Ramadan, also calls for a lasting ceasefire beyond the holy month and the release of hostages held by Hamas and other Palestinian groups.

Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its approval of the resolution, emphasizing the need for its immediate implementation. While acknowledging the limited timeframe, they see it as a crucial step to stop bloodshed and facilitate humanitarian aid deliveries.

The resolution passed with 14 votes and one abstention from the United States. This abstention was criticized by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called it a “clear retreat” from US policy.

Netanyahu further stated that the US had previously supported linking a ceasefire to hostage release, but due to the lack of such linkage in this resolution, they abstained. In response, Israel canceled a planned visit by officials to Washington.

Palestine’s UN representative, Riyad Mansour, expressed that this action is long overdue. He highlighted the immense suffering endured by Palestinians in Gaza, emphasizing the need for an immediate end to the violence and occupation.

The ongoing war in Gaza began in October 2023. The UN estimates over 100,000 Palestinians have been killed or injured, with millions displaced.

The success of this ceasefire will depend on its implementation by all parties involved. The international community is hopeful that this resolution will be a turning point towards a lasting peace agreement.
