Today, December 20, England’s Rebecca Welch will formally make history as the first female referee to officiate a Premier League game. She is going to oversee the Fulham vs. Burnley match.
The coaches of several Premier League teams were inspired by her promotion to the league and applauded the decision. Welch has already refereed six games in the EFL Championship, the second division in England.
This week, Pep Guardiola, the coach of Manchester City, stated: Excellent news. Hopefully, in the future, there can be more. Everybody is more involved. It is good.
In turn, Arsenal Coach Mikel Arteta said: It is great news. I wish her all the best; it will be really positive. The diversity we have is incredibly positive for the league. It is something that was needed.
As for Eddie Howe of Newcastle continued, he expressed: I think it’s a great moment. For me, it’s got to be based on ability, not gender, ability to referee and I fully support it.
