During the Spring Festival holiday from January 28 to February 4, 2025, the Shanghai Museum continued to attract large numbers of visitors, many of whom were drawn to the ongoing exhibition “On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt.” The exhibition has become a prominent cultural highlight during the holiday season, with many visitors choosing to celebrate the New Year by immersing themselves in the rich history of ancient Egypt.
Co-hosted by the Shanghai Museum and the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, this exhibition, which runs from July 19, 2024, to August 17, 2025, features 788 artifacts spanning different periods of ancient Egyptian history. The collection includes iconic statues of pharaohs, intricate mummy sarcophagi, and stunning gold jewelry. According to the museum, over 95% of the exhibits are on display in Asia for the first time, providing a unique opportunity for local and international visitors to experience the grandeur of Egypt’s ancient civilization.
Some of the standout pieces include a resurrection figure of Osiris, a bust of King Ramesses II, and a head of a statue of Nefertiti, all of which have captivated museum-goers during the holiday period. Visitors also admired a mummy mask of a woman, and numerous statues from ancient Egypt’s rich artistic legacy.
The exhibition’s popularity is reflected in its impressive ticket sales, which have surpassed 1.4 million. The majority of visitors—over 70%—have come from outside Shanghai, including travelers from other provinces and even overseas. This influx of international tourists highlights the exhibition’s wide appeal and growing interest in ancient Egyptian culture across the globe.
The exhibition will remain open until August 17, 2025, offering plenty of time for more visitors to explore the fascinating treasures of ancient Egypt. The Shanghai Museum’s dedication to cultural exchange through such exhibitions continues to make it a key destination for art and history enthusiasts.
