The events of the Omla Nadra series, starring Nelly Karim, currently shown within the Ramadan 2023 series season, shed light on the situation of women in Upper Egypt who do not inherit because of inherited traditions that defy religion, and the fierce struggles they go through with their late husbands’ families and their refusal to surrender to depriving widows of inheritance, forcing them to battle their way to get their basic rights.
Article 49 of the Inheritance Law stipulates a penalty of imprisonment for no less than six months and a fine of up to EGP 100,000 for anyone who deliberately refrains from handing over one of the heirs their legal share of the inheritance or withholds a document confirming a share to an heir, or who refuses to deliver that bond if requested by any of the legal heirs and in the case of recurrence, the penalty shall be imprisonment for no less than one year.
The inheritance law permitted reconciliation in these crimes in any case, even after the verdict reach a final decision. Any of the victims, the legal heirs, the accused or convicted person, or any of these parties’ private attorneys may establish reconciliation in these crimes before the prosecution, depending on the circumstances.
It is worth mentioning that this article came to confront such crimes, especially in light of the ongoing suffering of women, especially in rural areas and Upper Egypt, and failing to receive their earned right to inheritance.
