President Sisi Approves New Board of Trustees for Grand Egyptian Museum

On December 30, 2024, Egypt’s official Gazette published a significant decision in its Issue No. 52 (A), in which President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi ratified Decision No. 600 of 2024 to reconstitute the Board of Trustees of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) for a three-year term.

As part of this decision, the newly formed board will include both international and Egyptian members, reflecting the global nature of the museum and its vital cultural and academic significance.

International Members of the Board:

  1. Taro Aso
  2. Yuji Korehira
  3. Prince Sultan bin Suleiman
  4. Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan
  5. The Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (ex officio)

Egyptian Members of the Board:

  1. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities
  2. Minister of Culture
  3. Minister of Finance
  4. Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina
  5. Dr. Zahi Hawass
  6. Dr. Farouk Hosny
  7. Hisham Okasha
  8. Mohamed Lotfi Mansour
  9. Journalist Sherif Amer
  10. Ghada Fathy Waly
  11. Khaled Ahmed El-Anany

Ghada Fathy Waly, notably, is among the prominent Egyptians named to the Board. Her inclusion is a strategic move that highlights her expertise and contributions to Egypt’s cultural sector, as well as the importance of involving professionals who can ensure the success of GEM in shaping Egypt’s narrative of its rich heritage for future generations.

This restructuring is part of the broader vision to ensure that the GEM remains at the forefront of Egypt’s cultural and archaeological leadership, aligning with the country’s broader efforts to boost tourism and cultural diplomacy.
