Today, Dr. Yasmin Fouad, Minister of Environment, and Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development, witnessed the signing of a contract between the Governorate of Port Said and the British Cleaning Company. The contract covers the collection and transportation of municipal waste from residential and commercial units, as well as street cleaning and waste removal from public facilities across several districts of Port Said Governorate (East, Arabs, Mena, Suburbs, Flowers, West, South) and Port Fouad City.

The agreement promises to overhaul the waste collection, transportation, and street cleaning services in Port Said’s districts, including East, Arabs, Mena, Suburbs, Flowers, West, South, and Port Fouad City.

The contract was officially signed by Maj. Gen. Mohab Habashi, Governor of Port Said, and Atef Mohamed Farag, Chairman of the British Cleaning Company, at the Ministry of Local Development’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital. The event was also attended by Dr. Khaled Qassem, Assistant Minister of Local Development, as well as a number of key officials and representatives from the British Cleaning Company.

A Transformative Approach to Waste Management

This agreement is part of the second phase of Egypt’s integrated waste management system, under Law No. 202 of 2020. The partnership with the British Cleaning Company aims to modernize waste collection and street cleaning, providing more efficient, environmentally friendly solutions for the residents of Port Said. The program includes waste removal from residential, commercial, and public spaces, ensuring cleaner streets and public areas.

Commitment to Environmental Progress

Dr. Fouad highlighted the importance of the initiative, underscoring that improving waste management is vital not just for cleanliness but for the overall health of the environment. “This contract marks a significant step in our efforts to provide cleaner, greener cities,” Dr. Fouad said. “We are committed to supporting the development of sustainable waste management practices across Egypt, and this partnership is essential in achieving that goal.”

She also pointed out that the Ministry will continue to provide technical assistance to ensure the successful implementation of the new waste management system in Port Said, with a strong emphasis on introducing innovative solutions to improve waste treatment and disposal.

Focusing on Real Change for Citizens

On the other hand, Dr. Awad, Minister of Local Development, spoke about the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing waste management services nationwide. “This agreement is part of our broader goal to improve cleanliness and waste management systems throughout Egypt,” Dr. Awad said. “We want every citizen to feel a tangible difference in the quality of life in their communities, and this initiative is a major step in that direction.”

The Minister also stressed that the new waste management system is not just about cleaning streets but also about investing in sustainable infrastructure, such as recycling facilities and waste treatment plants. “We are building a future where our cities are not only cleaner but also environmentally responsible,” she added.

The Governor’s Dedication to Improvement

In this regard, Habashi expressed his gratitude to both the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Local Development for their unwavering support in upgrading the city’s waste management system. He announced that the British Cleaning Company would begin its trial period in March, with the goal of significantly improving cleanliness across Port Said. “This is a turning point for our city,” Habashi said. “Residents will begin to see real changes in the cleanliness of our streets, and we are committed to making this transformation lasting.”

A New Era for Waste Management in Port Said

The British Cleaning Company is set to begin operations next month, with an initial trial period to assess its impact on the city’s cleanliness. The collaboration is expected to set a new standard for waste management in Egypt, with lessons and successes from Port Said to be shared across the country. The government, through its joint efforts with the private sector, is positioning Egypt to lead in waste management innovation and environmental responsibility.

As the trial begins, the eyes of the nation will be on Port Said to witness the tangible improvements that the city is set to experience—proving that with the right partnership and commitment, cleaner, more sustainable cities are within reach.
