Renowned filmmaker Nadine Labaki, nominated for an Oscar and won a Jury Prize at the Festival de Cannes, has been selected as a jury member for the upcoming 77th edition of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. The festival is scheduled from May 14 to 25 in France’s picturesque Cote d’Azur region.
This will be Labaki’s second appearance as a jury member at Cannes, following her presidency of the Un Certain Regard jury in 2019. Labaki is a celebrated Lebanese filmmaker who has significantly contributed to the film industry.
Labaki first gained recognition after directing award-winning commercials and music videos. In 2004, she participated in the Résidence de la Cinéfondation of the Festival de Cannes, where she wrote and developed “Caramel,” her first feature film. The film was an impertinent ode to female solidarity and became the most significant success of Lebanese cinema abroad.
Labaki’s film “Capernaum” won the Jury Prize at the Festival de Cannes in 2018 and was also nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. In 2011, she presented “Where Do We Go Now?” in the Un Certain Regard selection, a bold universal fable about tolerance. She also directed the ‘O Milagre’ segment for the sketch film “Rio, I Love You” in 2014.
Labaki’s impressive body of work has earned her a well-deserved reputation as a talented filmmaker, and her selection as a jury member for the Cannes Film Festival is a testament to her exceptional skills and experience.
