The health advisor at the Unit for Combating Violence against Women at the National Council for Women, Dr. Amal Philip, emphasized the critical role of nursing teams in responding to information and misconceptions related to the crime of female genital mutilation.
Her remarks came during a workshop organized by the Council for Health Service Providers in Safe Women’s Units on the “National Guide to Combating Female Genital Mutilation,” in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund, and targeting 20 nursing teams in Safe Women’s units in several medical colleges at university hospitals in Alexandria.
Philip presented the global and national statistics for the crime of female genital mutilation and the reasons behind the continuation of this crime, explaining the reporting mechanisms.
For her part, Dr. Rehab Abdel Rahman, Assistant Professor and Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital at Ain Shams University, explained the health complications of that crime on women and pointed to the measures taken to treat the short and long-term physical complications resulting from it.
In turn, the coordinator of the health aspect of the Council’s Anti-Violence Unit, Dr. Mona Hamdi, pointed out the importance of nursing teams achieving the purpose of the counseling provided in the community and reviewed the correct verbal and physical communication methods with the counseling recipients, and how to manage dialogue with them.
