The National Council for Women is participating as part of the Egyptian delegation in the meetings of the 65th session of the WIPO Assemblies, held at the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 9 to 17, 2024. The Egyptian delegation also includes Sohag’s female tell artists participating in these events.
The Council’s participation comes in light of the success of the project “Intellectual Property and Women’s Entrepreneurship: Empowering Women in Local Communities through Intellectual Property (Collective Mark) – Talli Craft Sector in Sohag, Egypt – A Pioneering Project,” which was launched in partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and resulted in the registration of the first collective trademark for a traditional craft in Egypt – Talli Shandaweel. The Council’s delegation will present the outputs and results of this important project during the meetings.
The Council also participates in the exhibition held on the sidelines of the events. This exhibition includes the products of “Tali Shandaweel,” which has obtained the collective mark, and other products made by Egyptian women who were trained in workshops organized by the Council.
It is worth noting that the meetings of the WIPO Assemblies are considered one of the most prominent annual events in the field of intellectual property rights at the global level.
These assemblies include various bodies concerned with regulating intellectual property at the international level, which represent all member states of the organization, with the participation of many ministers and delegations at the highest level (the number of member states is about 193 countries), in addition to various observers, non-governmental organizations, and civil society organizations that meet annually at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss and exchange views and make decisions on issues related to intellectual property rights.
The importance of WIPO’s assemblies also includes providing the opportunity to cooperate and interact with other member states, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector in the field of intellectual property protection, promoting innovation and creativity worldwide, and making decisions and directing policies on intellectual property rights issues at the global level.
Egypt has been an active member of WIPO assemblies since its establishment in 1974 and has participated in many WIPO general assemblies and meetings over the years.
