The President of the National Council for Women, Dr. Maya Morsi, participated in a session titled “Women’s Participation in Climate Change,” organized by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, in the presence of Dr. Hala Al-Saeed, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, and with the participation of Ambassador Hisham Badr, Assistant Minister of Planning and the General Coordinator of the National Initiative for smart, green projects, among other high-level attendees.
The council’s participation came during the activities of the twenty-eighth Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), Which activities began on November 30 and will continue until December 12 in the UAE.
Dr. Morsy confirmed that since the launch of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects, the National Council for Women has focused on raising the level of awareness about women’s issues, the environment, and climate change.
She further affirmed that enhancing awareness of the concept of “just environmental transition” and the potential of modern technology to achieve a sustainable future for all has been one of the main goals of the Council.
The President of the Council added that the decisions of the Council’s branches and local teams in all governorates played an effective role in spreading awareness about women, the environment, and climate change, and their efforts were effective in encouraging women in the governorates to actively participate and compete by presenting worthwhile projects designed specifically for women and consistent with green and smart standards.
She explained that the projects submitted by women won an average of more than 45% in the first and second rounds.
The session also included a presentation on Egypt’s experience in the issue of women, the environment, and climate change during the period between COP27 and COP28, where reference was made to Egypt’s international proposal regarding women, the environment, and climate change, launched before the United Nations in March of 2022, and Egypt’s hosting of the COP27 Conference of the Parties last year in Sharm El-Sheikh, which included organizing many sessions and activities on gender Day of the conference, where the “African Women and Adaptation to Climate Change” initiative was announced, and what preceded and followed that was the holding of many global and regional meetings and consultations.
