Egypt’s Ministry of Social Solidarity announced that 4.7 million families received a total of EGP 41 billion in cash transfers in 2024 through the Takaful & Karama and social insurance cash support programs. This initiative reflects Egypt’s ongoing efforts to provide essential financial assistance to low-income families, ensuring they have access to basic services and resources.
Overview of Takaful & Karama Program
The Takaful & Karama program’s primary goal is to support low-income families with school-aged children, elderly individuals, and those with special needs, particularly in Upper Egypt, a region that has traditionally faced higher levels of poverty.
Additional Benefits and Services
The Ministry’s statement highlighted that 93% of beneficiaries also receive additional food subsidies, including bread and other essential goods, which are crucial in light of the rising costs of living. This comprehensive support helps reduce the financial strain on families and ensures they have access to basic nutritional needs.
In addition to cash transfers and food subsidies, beneficiaries are also enrolled in Egypt’s comprehensive health insurance system. This includes participation in the healthcare program for the underprivileged and the state-funded medical treatment program, ensuring that families in need have access to critical medical services without financial barriers.
To further expand access to healthcare, the Ministry has coordinated with the Health Insurance Organization to extend coverage to Takaful & Karama beneficiaries who reside in areas not currently covered by the national health insurance system. This ensures that even those living in more remote regions can access essential healthcare services.
The EGP 41 billion in cash transfers for 2024 underscores Egypt’s commitment to providing robust social protection systems that ensure vulnerable families have the financial support and healthcare they need. With ongoing investments in social protection programs and the expansion of benefits, Egypt is continuing to strengthen its welfare state, aiming to reduce poverty and support long-term economic stability for its citizens.
