The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research organized a seminar focused on investment opportunities in cross-border education in Egypt, as well as the sustainability of scholarship programs. The event took place during the visit of the UK Higher Education Mission to Egypt, with the attendance of Dr. Mustafa Refaat, Secretary of the Supreme Council of Universities, UK Ambassador to Egypt, Gareth Bayley, and Mark Howard, Director of the British Council in Egypt. Also present were Dr. Ayman Fayed, Assistant Minister for Strategic Planning, Training, and Workforce Development, Dr. Mohamed El-Sharkawy, Assistant Minister for Policy and Economic Affairs, and Mahend Khaled, Chairman of the Egyptian-British Chamber of Commerce, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Higher Education and representatives from seven leading UK universities and Egyptian university presidents.
In his speech, delivered by Dr. Mustafa Refaat on behalf of Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education, he expressed appreciation for the longstanding cooperation between Egypt and the UK in higher education. He emphasized that this partnership has played a significant role in enhancing cross-border education opportunities, reinforcing Egypt’s position as a regional hub for higher education.
Dr. Refaat also highlighted Egypt’s ongoing efforts to develop its educational institutions according to global standards, particularly in terms of infrastructure and curricula. He noted the success of international university branches in Egypt and their significant impact on improving the academic and research landscape in the country.
UK Ambassador Gareth Bayley emphasized that the UK Higher Education Mission’s visit reflected the UK’s commitment to strengthening educational cooperation with Egypt. He praised the Ministry of Higher Education’s efforts to develop the education system and promote cross-border education. Mark Howard, Director of the British Council, stressed the importance of enhancing collaboration between British and Egyptian institutions to ensure high-quality education. He also referred to the British Council’s report, which highlighted Egypt’s leadership role in the Middle East and North Africa region, featuring case studies such as the partnership between the University of East London and Ain Shams University, and the collaboration between the University of Hertfordshire and the Global Academic Foundation. These initiatives have contributed to expanding access to British degrees in the region.
