Ministers of Youth and Sports and Social Solidarity Attend Press Conference for Egypt’s Special Olympics Delegation for the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games

Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Maya Morsy, Minister of Social Solidarity, and Eng. Hani Mahmoud, Chairman of the Egyptian Special Olympics, participated in a press conference to announce Egypt’s delegation for the Special Olympics World Winter Games. The Games will take place in Turin, Italy, from March 7 to 16, 2025.

The event also welcomed members of the Egyptian delegation, as well as officials from the Ministries of Youth and Sports and Social Solidarity, and representatives from sponsor companies.

Preparation for the Special Olympics

During the conference, officials outlined the final preparations for Egypt’s participation in the international sporting event. They emphasized the state’s unwavering support for individuals with intellectual disabilities, particularly Egyptian Special Olympics athletes.

Dr. Ashraf Sobhi highlighted the government’s dedication to empowering people with disabilities. Under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s leadership, Egypt has invested in various initiatives aimed at integrating individuals with disabilities into society. Specifically, Sobhi noted that sports play a vital role in helping these individuals thrive and integrate.

Collaboration Between Ministries

Dr. Sobhi also praised the cooperation between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Social Solidarity. The collaboration has enhanced the country’s ability to achieve success and support athletes with intellectual disabilities. The Minister reassured that his ministry will provide all necessary technical and administrative support to ensure Egypt’s athletes represent the nation proudly at the event.

Message to Athletes

At the end of his speech, Dr. Sobhi sent a motivational message to the athletes: “You are the pride of Egypt’s sports community. Your determination and spirit make you exemplary role models. We believe in your ability to excel and represent Egypt with honor.”

Support for Athletes with Disabilities

Dr. Maya Morsy, Minister of Social Solidarity, expressed her joy at being part of this significant moment. She proudly wished Egypt’s athletes well, acknowledging the incredible strength and determination they embody. Morsy stressed that their participation not only showcases their abilities but also promotes inclusivity and the potential of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

She explained that Egypt, under President El-Sisi’s leadership, places a high priority on the rights and empowerment of people with disabilities. The Ministry of Social Solidarity ensures these individuals receive tailored support through programs designed to foster integration, self-confidence, and achievement.

Recognizing the Efforts of the Team

Dr. Morsy also expressed gratitude toward the Egyptian Special Olympics organizing committee. She thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the delegation’s preparation, including coaches, administrators, and the athletes’ families. These groups have played a crucial role in supporting the athletes’ development.

Furthermore, Dr. Morsy offered a special thanks to the delegation’s sponsors: “we” Telecom, EgyptAir, and Majid Al Futtaim.

The Path to Turin

Dr. Morsy encouraged the athletes with a heartfelt message: “Every moment of your journey is an inspiration to all of us. You are proof that strong willpower can break any barrier. We are confident that you will raise Egypt’s flag high at this global event.”

Eng. Hani Mahmoud, Chairman of the Egyptian Special Olympics, commended the athletes for their resilience and perseverance. He emphasized that the Special Olympics is not just a sporting event; it is a platform for individuals with disabilities to showcase their talents and creativity.

About the Special Olympics World Winter Games

The Special Olympics World Winter Games are one of the largest events for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Held every four years, these games feature athletes from around the globe. This year, the Games will take place across four Italian cities: Turin, Pragelato, Bardonecchia, and Cesana.

With nearly 1,548 athletes from 103 countries, the event will feature competitions in nine different sports. The opening ceremony is scheduled for March 8, and the closing ceremony will take place on March 15.

The Egyptian Delegation

The Egyptian delegation consists of 21 members, including six athletes, along with coaches, medical staff, and administrators. The delegation will be led by Prof. Dr. Bassem Mohamed Tahami, with Mr. Amr Mohi El-Din serving as Deputy Head. Dr. Mohamed Hossam Ibrahim will accompany the team as the official doctor.

The athletes representing Egypt in the following sports are:

  • Cross-Country Skiing: Mohamed Ayman Mohamed Abdel Aziz, Radwa Mohamed Said Mohamed
  • Snow Running: Ahmed Mohamed Mahmoud El-Bahwashi, Iman Mohamed Shafie
  • Ice Skating: Antoine Majed Samir, Nourhan Othman Mohamed Abdel Moniem

This delegation is an example of Egypt’s commitment to supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities and providing them with opportunities to shine on the global stage. The upcoming Special Olympics World Winter Games are set to showcase the immense talents of Egypt’s athletes, and the country stands behind them every step of the way.
