Mona Yousef

In a high-level meeting aimed at reinforcing Egypt’s green industrial transformation,  Minister of Planning,  Dr. Rania Al-Mashat,met with senior representatives from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to discuss strategic cooperation on the Climate Investment Funds (CIF)-backed Industrial Emissions Reduction Program and the implementation of Egypt’s flagship NWFE (Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy) platform.

The meeting brought together Giampiero Nacci, Managing Director for Sustainable Business and Infrastructure at EBRD, Mark Davis, Regional Director for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean, Dimitri Koufos, Head of Sustainable Business, Industry, and Agriculture, and Reem El Saady, Deputy Head of EBRD Egypt’s Government Affairs Office.

A Global Recognition for Climate Leadership

Dr. Al-Mashat welcomed the EBRD delegation, underscoring the strength of Egypt’s strategic partnership with the Bank and the tangible outcomes achieved across multiple development fronts. She praised the fruitful collaboration that led to Egypt’s selection as one of only seven developing countries worldwide to benefit from the CIF’s industrial decarbonization program — a landmark initiative that delivers technical assistance, concessional financing, and grants.

Advancing Green Industry and Export Competitiveness

The dialogue focused on next-phase implementation of the industrial decarbonization program in Egypt, a key step toward aligning Egypt’s manufacturing sector with global sustainability standards and facilitating greater access to European markets. Al-Mashat emphasized that decarbonization is not only a climate imperative but a core component of Egypt’s strategy to enhance industrial competitiveness and unlock private sector investment.

From NWFE to Systemic Reform

The meeting also addressed outcomes from the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, recently held in Seville, Spain. Minister Al-Mashat noted the significance of the conference’s final declaration, which highlighted Egypt’s NWFE platform as a global model for innovative national financing mechanisms.

NWFE, launched in 2022, is Egypt’s integrated platform for mobilizing climate-aligned investment in the water, food, and energy sectors. Under its energy pillar, Egypt has already secured $3.9 billion in concessional finance, enabling the private sector to develop over 4.2 GW in renewable energy capacity.

A Vision for Long-Term Investment and Structural Reform

Minister Al-Mashat expressed appreciation for EBRD’s continued support in mobilizing blended finance for private sector-led renewable energy projects and reaffirmed Egypt’s determination to align development policies with climate goals, working hand-in-hand with international partners.

The meeting concluded with mutual commitment to deepening cooperation across climate finance, industrial sustainability, and global financial reform, reinforcing Egypt’s role as a regional leader in climate action and sustainable development.
