The Met Gala 2023 made a dramatic comeback yesterday, May 1st, with the annual celebration of the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibition, which, for 2023, pays tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld.
Under the theme Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, the fashion’s most extravagant night took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
The legendary designer sadly passed away in 2019 at the age of 85. He was one of the most prolific and celebrated fashion designers of all time and has headed up some of the biggest fashion houses in the world, including Fendi, Chanel, and his namesake label, all three of which he acted as creative director until his death.
One of the most iconic looks this year was Jared Leto’s catsuit. Known for his bold outfits every year, the actor styled a real-life-looking catsuit to celebrate the late Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette, and even danced with it.
The attending celebrities charmingly interpreted the theme. The event presented a memorable opportunity to see other designers and rival fashion houses put their spin on Lagerfeld’s aesthetic. There were also a couple of obvious references to Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, and the variants of the colors black and white dominated the looks at the 2023 gala scene.
