Mashreq, a leading financial institution in the MENA region, has successfully completed its environmental clean-up mission at Wadi Degla Protectorate, one of Egypt’s most important natural reserves. This initiative is a key part of Mashreq’s global Climb2Change program, which aims to raise awareness around sustainability and inspire action toward environmental conservation.

During the month-long mission in November 2024, Mashreq employees, in collaboration with renowned adventurers Omar Samra and Manal Rostom, successfully removed a total of 2.182 tonnes of general waste and 120 tonnes of construction waste from the protected desert ecosystem of Wadi Degla. The initiative is part of a broader effort that includes the world’s largest mountain clean-up operation, spanning 14 mountains and involving the removal of waste from seven peaks and seven base camps globally.

The mission’s success was not limited to its environmental impact but also created significant social value. Over 72 local entities benefited from Mashreq’s educational sessions, which focused on sustainability practices such as recycling and waste reduction. These sessions were part of a broader strategy to foster long-term environmental stewardship, with participants learning the “leave-no-trace” principles essential for protecting fragile ecosystems.

Mashreq employees contributed 228 hours to the cause, while external volunteers from schools, universities, and local communities collectively added 581 hours, bringing the total volunteer time to 809 hours. The initiative underscored Mashreq’s commitment to integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into its operations and to actively engaging employees and local communities in hands-on conservation efforts.

Amr El Bahey, CEO of Mashreq Egypt, reflected on the success of the mission: “Completing the Wadi Degla Protectorate clean-up as part of the Climb2Change initiative demonstrates Mashreq’s deep commitment to environmental conservation. This mission aligns with our broader ESG strategy and reinforces our dedication to creating long-term impact. By empowering individuals through education and engagement, we’re fostering a culture of sustainability that will have a lasting effect on our communities and our planet.”

Adventurer Omar Samra echoed these sentiments: “This initiative goes beyond just a clean-up; it’s a powerful call to action for all of us to embrace sustainability. Mashreq’s ethos of ‘Rise Every Day’ perfectly aligns with this mission, reminding us that meaningful change happens when we unite for a common cause.”

Manal Rostom added: “The Climb2Change mission in Wadi Degla was a unique opportunity to merge my passion for adventure with my commitment to environmental conservation. It’s a reminder that every effort—no matter how big or small—can help protect our natural heritage. Through this initiative, I hope to inspire others to take responsibility for the places we cherish.”

Mashreq’s clean-up at Wadi Degla Protectorate marks a significant milestone in its ongoing Climb2Change initiative. Looking forward, the bank plans to collaborate with local governments, environmental organizations, and waste management entities to ensure the long-term success of the project. The initiative will also expand to other regions, with future expeditions targeting ecosystems in Tibet (China) and beyond, further cementing Mashreq’s position as a leader in environmental sustainability.

By setting new standards for corporate environmental responsibility, Mashreq is calling on businesses and organizations worldwide to join the movement and contribute to the preservation of our planet for future generations.
