After a prolonged anticipation, ‘Barbie’ is finally gracing the screens of Egyptian theaters, with tickets now available for booking at VOX, Renaissance, and Zawya cinemas.
Renaissance, Golden Stars and Point 90, rated the film 12+.
Others like VOX Cinemas Egypt rated Barbie 18 TC.
However, a source at the Censorship on Artistic Works, the official body which assigns ratings to artworks and monitors adherence to societal morals and values, told Ahram Online that Barbie is officially rated 12+ in Egypt.
Worldwide, the film is rated at PG 13 (Parental Guidance if under 13).
The highly anticipated film, starring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, was originally scheduled to premiere in Egypt on July 19th but was postponed until August 31st.
This delay left many fans disappointed after eagerly anticipating its release. Despite rumors that the movie could be banned in Arab countries, it was ultimately released in Egypt to the delight of fans and supporters.
However, the film sparked controversy in other parts of the Arab world, leading to its official ban in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Lebanon over concerns that it goes against local societal values.
Nevertheless, the release of the film in Egypt was met with excitement and enthusiasm from fans who had been preparing for weeks, buying all sorts of Barbie-themed clothing and accessories in pink. Some cinemas in Egypt had differing ratings for the film, which caused some confusion among the public.
