History was made as Al Ahly claimed victory in the first-ever Women’s Cairo derby, defeating their fierce rivals Zamalek. Al Ahly and Zamalek decided to establish women’s teams for the first time after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) made it mandatory for the clubs participating in the CAF Inter-Club competitions to have a women’s team as part of their structure.

To make it even more interesting, the draw put the Cairo giants face to face in the opening round of the Egyptian Women’s Premier League, with the game taking place at Zamalek’s ground in Mit Okba.

Nigerian striker Charity Reuben was the hero for the Reds as she made history by becoming the first-ever goalscorer for the Al Ahly’s women’s team, scoring twice in the 43rd and 74th minute.

Sebstia Akwi also became Zamalek’s first-ever goalscorer when her effort from a free-kick went directly past the Al Ahly keeper in the 92nd minute to end the game in a 2-1 victory for the Reds. Al Ahly’s Nora Khaled was also sent off in the 90th minute, becoming the first-ever player to receive a red card in the Cairo women’s derby. In the remaining fixtures, record holders with 14 titles Wadi Degla beat Al-Tayran 6-1, while title-holders Tutankhamun FC beat Al-Maadi 7-0.

Meanwhile, the newly formed Pyramids FC women’s team beat Ittihad of Alexandria 3-1, while Al Masry lost their first clash to ZED FC 2-0. Modern Sport beat Palm Hills 7-0, and Bank Al Ahly claimed a 5-0 victory over Ittihad Basyon as ENPPI’s clash with Delphi was postponed. Al Ahly is next in action against giants Wadi Degla on Friday, while Zamalek will be up against ZED FC on Monday.
