In a move that underscores the critical role of digital leadership in shaping the future of energy, Eng. Iman Wafi has been appointed to lead digital services and transformation across the oil and energy sectors for the ICT Misr Group, encompassing ICT Misr, ICT Libya, and IoT Misr. The group stands at the forefront of digital infrastructure and integrated technology ecosystems in North Africa, with global technology partnerships and a proven track record in cybersecurity, AI, IoT, and advanced data analytics.
This appointment follows a remarkable 38-year career in Egypt’s petroleum sector, culminating in her tenure as Chief Information Officer of the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC). With this transition, Eng. Wafi opens a new chapter, expanding her strategic influence beyond national borders to support digital evolution across Egypt, Libya, and the wider North African and Arab region.
In a statement marking her new role, Eng. Wafi expressed her enduring commitment to driving digital innovation and enabling institutional resilience across energy and petroleum enterprises. “My goal has always been to modernize, empower, and future-proof this vital sector,” she noted. “Now, I look forward to continuing this journey through ICT Misr’s regional platform, fostering sustainable and tech-driven growth across the industry.”
Her appointment arrives at a time when the energy sector is undergoing a global shift toward digitalization—a transformation fueled by the imperatives of operational efficiency, climate adaptation, and cybersecurity. Eng. Wafi’s leadership is thus not only timely but also essential in navigating this complex transition.
A Legacy of Innovation
Eng. Wafi’s contributions to Egypt’s petroleum sector are widely recognized. A graduate of Ain Shams University with a degree in information systems engineering, she began her career at GUPCO and later led the founding of the IT department at the Pharaonic Petroleum Company in 2009. There, she established a comprehensive strategy for building IT infrastructure aligned with the unique operational and security demands of the oil sector.
As Assistant CEO for IT at EGPC, she spearheaded transformative initiatives, including the development of a unified asset and resource management system across refining and distribution companies. Her leadership was instrumental in launching AI-powered digital platforms that now support various operational areas, from exploration and production to safety and environmental management.
Perhaps most notably, she led the development of Egypt’s first centralized cloud application for the petroleum sector—an innovation designed to unify standards, reduce costs, and drive system-wide integration.
Eng. Wafi also played a key role in Egypt’s Petroleum Sector Modernization Program, launched in 2016. She led the design and implementation of its youth leadership training modules and capacity-building programs for process safety teams. Additionally, she oversaw the creation of unified data platforms that now serve as a backbone for performance tracking and strategic decision-making across the sector.
Recognition and Global Engagement
In recognition of her lifelong impact, Eng. Wafi was awarded the Legacy Award at the 2023 She Is Energy ceremony, honoring women who have left a lasting mark in the energy field. In 2024, she received the Digital Transformation Award for her outstanding work in revolutionizing the information infrastructure of Egypt’s petroleum sector.
She also represented Egypt at the Schlumberger Digital International Conference in 2024, showcasing the success of the national unified production data platform—an achievement hailed as a model for digital excellence in the energy industry.
A Vision for Regional Integration
Looking ahead, Eng. Wafi has articulated a clear vision for cross-border collaboration, aiming to scale her experience across institutions in Egypt and beyond. She emphasizes the need for agile, secure, and sustainable digital solutions that reflect the evolving dynamics of global energy markets and the growing reliance on technology.
With ICT Misr Group, she intends to broaden the scope of digital empowerment by advancing smart technologies, enhancing governance, and developing scalable infrastructure tailored to the specific challenges of oil, gas, and energy production across the MENA region.
Her appointment is more than a personal milestone—it is a signal of where the energy sector is heading. In Eng. Iman Wafi, the region gains a visionary leader who combines technical expertise, strategic foresight, and a deep understanding of institutional transformation. Her journey exemplifies the critical intersection of digital innovation and energy resilience in an increasingly complex global landscape.
