The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recently inaugurated its newly renovated Middle East Regional Office in Cairo, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s commitment to enhancing regional aviation cooperation. The modernization, which received support from the Egyptian government, aims to boost ICAO’s regional presence and improve its technical support capabilities for member states across the Middle East.

ICAO Council President, Salvatore Sciacchitano, emphasized the importance of the renovation during the inauguration ceremony. “This renovation represents a significant investment in our shared aviation future,” Sciacchitano stated. “The enhanced facilities will strengthen our ability to support Member States across the Middle East region.”

A New Era for Regional Aviation Cooperation

ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar and ICAO Middle East Regional Director Mohamed Abu Baker Farea met with Egypt’s Minister of Civil Aviation, Captain Sameh El Hefny, and President of the Civil Aviation Authority of Egypt, Captain Amr El Sharkawy, to discuss the future of regional cooperation. Salazar noted, “Our Middle East Office has played a vital role in advancing regional aviation cooperation ever since it was established. This modernized facility will help us better serve the growing needs of aviation in the region.”

The event also coincided with ICAO’s 80th anniversary celebrations in Egypt, highlighting the organization’s pivotal role in fostering global air mobility and facilitating diplomatic and technical cooperation among 193 countries.

ICAO’s Role in Global Air Mobility and Sustainable Growth

Founded in 1944, ICAO has been instrumental in building a global air transportation network that connects families, cultures, and businesses while promoting socio-economic prosperity. As aviation enters a new era marked by digitalization and innovative flight technologies, ICAO’s support is more critical than ever. The organization continues to expand its partnerships with UN and technical stakeholders to offer strategic global solutions for sustainable air travel.

In its commitment to meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving aviation landscape, ICAO’s newly upgraded Middle East office will serve as a key hub in the organization’s efforts to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable air travel for the future.
