Pope Tawadros II, the head of the Orthodox Church, received a visit from Sheikh Ahmed El Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al Azhar.
The Grand Imam wished everyone a happy new year and congratulated Pope Tawadros on his Christmas.
He also emphasized how those reciprocal visits show the camaraderie, love, and unity among all Egyptians.
El Tayeb also discusses the worsening situation in Gaza with the Pope, touching on issues like racism, genocide, bombing, and the killing of innocent people, particularly children, as well as the war and the international community’s silence.
In efforts to keep an eye on the situation in Gaza and provide a consistent and strong voice for the Gazan people, the Grand Imam suggested that Al Azhar and the Coptic Church form a mutual committee.
Regarding the visits between Al Azhar and the Coptic Church, which strengthened the bond between Muslims and Christians and would ultimately bring happiness to all Egyptians, the Pope expressed his joy on his part.
The Grand Imam’s suggestion to form a committee to keep an eye on and report on the circumstances in Gaza was warmly received by Pope Tawadros, particularly in light of the recent and horrifying upsurge in Israeli violence and killing of innocent civilians.
