Giza Zoo and Orman Garden are set to reopen in September 2025 after an extensive redevelopment led by Hadayieq Company, the entity responsible for the renovation, management, and operation of these historic landmarks. The final design of the revitalization project was unveiled at the ITB Berlin, the world’s largest tourism exhibition, held from March 4-6, 2025.
Originally built by Khedive Ismail and opened on March 1, 1891, Giza Zoo holds the distinction of being Africa’s first zoo, the oldest in the Middle East, and the third oldest worldwide. The zoo, spanning 112 feddans, is home to 186 species of mammals, birds, and reptiles, as well as rare plant species and around 3,000 historic trees. The ambitious project aims to modernize the zoo while preserving its historical significance and enhancing the visitor experience.
Hadayieq’s redevelopment plans will transform Giza Zoo and Orman Garden into premier global destinations for adventure, education, and environmental conservation. The goal is to restore these attractions’ importance on the international tourism map. The company has partnered with top international consultants and experts to ensure the highest standards of animal care, heritage conservation, and botanical garden maintenance.
Mohamed Kamel, Chairperson of Hadayieq, called the project a transformative milestone for Egypt’s entertainment and tourism industries. “This redevelopment seamlessly blends innovation and modernity with a rich historical legacy,” Kamel said. “Our vision is to elevate Giza Zoo and Orman Garden into world-class attractions offering an immersive experience that combines entertainment, education, and environmental conservation.”
Key updates in the redevelopment include redesigned enclosures, new attractions such as live sea lion, bird, and elephant shows, an underwater viewing area for hippos, a glass-domed meerkat exhibit, and an interactive ring-tailed lemur experience. Visitors will also be able to participate in animal feeding sessions and guided tours. Additionally, Giza Zoo Safari Glamping will offer luxury accommodations immersed in nature, and the Zoo Antique Bazaar will feature handcrafted souvenirs. New dining options will be available through restaurants and cafés within the complex.
The planned underground tunnel connecting Giza Zoo to Orman Garden will provide seamless access between the two historic attractions. The revamped Giza Zoo and Orman Garden will not only offer a rich blend of history and nature but also cater to entertainment, tourism, and conservation goals.
With this revitalization, Giza Zoo and Orman Garden are poised to become a major destination on the global tourism map, securing their place as must-visit attractions for both locals and international tourists.
