This July, Shenzhen will host an unprecedented exhibition celebrating the life and work of legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907–1954), marking 118 years since her birth. The Sea World Culture and Arts Center will present Frida’s Paradox from July 12 to September 15, 2025, showcasing over 250 original paintings, handwritten letters, and personal belongings.
Co-curated by Kahlo’s great niece, Cristina Kahlo, and Juan Rafael Coronel Rivera, grandson of her husband Diego Rivera, the exhibit offers a rare, intimate glimpse into the artist’s multifaceted career. Visitors will encounter vibrant oil and watercolor paintings featuring Kahlo’s signature self-portraits, surreal animals, and symbolic motifs drawn from her tumultuous life.
Kahlo’s work channels the pain and resilience shaped by a devastating 1925 bus accident, complex surgeries, and turbulent relationships. The exhibition traces her artistic evolution, from early influences rooted in pre-Columbian art and Mexican folk traditions to the Indigenous clothing and jewelry she famously wore.
