The European Union has appointed Egyptian actresses May Elghety and Yasmina El Abd as Goodwill Ambassadors for the Team Europe Initiative on Integrated Water and Food Security.
The initiative is a collaborative effort by the EU and its member states to raise awareness about the critical importance of water conservation and to strengthen food security across Egypt. With a strong focus on youth engagement, the campaign seeks to involve artists, influencers, and young leaders in driving environmental change.
Championing Sustainability Through Art and Youth Engagement
Both actresses are widely recognized for their talent and influence among Egypt’s younger generations. May Elghety, known for her socially conscious roles and advocacy, and Yasmina El Abd, a rising star in regional cinema, bring authenticity and passion to the cause.
Their roles as ambassadors will include participating in public awareness campaigns, visiting local communities, and promoting sustainable water use and agriculture practices that support food resilience in the face of climate change.
Egypt’s Water and Food Security Challenges
Egypt faces growing challenges related to water scarcity, exacerbated by climate change, population growth, and upstream developments on the Nile. At the same time, the nation’s food security remains a pressing concern, with the government and international partners working to improve agricultural efficiency and reduce dependency on imports.
The Team Europe Initiative supports Egypt’s Vision 2030 by investing in green innovation, improving irrigation infrastructure, and promoting climate-smart agriculture to ensure a more resilient food system. By appointing cultural icons like Elghety and El Abd, the EU aims to connect with broader segments of Egyptian society, especially youth who are key to long-term behavioral change.
