Yesterday, Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad briefed Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli on the outcome of Egypt’s participation in the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Dubai, including the adoption of a decision to activate the loss and damage fund that was established at the COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh in 2022.
According to Fouad, COP28 adopted a resolution that mandates doubling the annual rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030, tripling the capacity of renewable energy sources worldwide, and achieving deep, rapid, and sustainable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. It also calls for increasing financing from various sources for climate change adaptation and mitigation.
In their meeting, they underlined the accomplishments of numerous ministries, governmental bodies, businesses, civil society groups, and young people in addressing climate change.
The minister said that the Egyptian pavilion at COP28 hosted about 72 sessions.
Fouad further reported that agreements for cooperation on climate solutions and environmental sustainability had been signed.
