Dalia El-Tayeb, the Regional Director of USAID’s Centre of Excellence for Energy (COEE), highlighted the immense potential for renewable energy production in Egypt. Egypt’s renewable energy sector, aligns with the nation’s Vision 2030, aims to produce 42% of its total energy from renewable resources.
Energy Day Conference to Drive Innovation and Collaboration
El-Tayeb made these remarks during a press conference announcing the upcoming Energy Day Conference, set for February 2, 2025. The event will focus on finding innovative solutions to advance Egypt’s energy system, with an emphasis on collaboration among all stakeholders. El-Tayeb stressed that Egypt’s distinguished scientists and researchers are key to advancing the sector and achieving the ambitious energy goals.
Building Capacity for Future Growth
The COEE is focused on capacity-building within Egyptian higher education institutions to promote innovation, modernization, and investment in the energy sector. In partnership with Arizona State University, COEE is working with Ain Shams University, Mansoura University, and Aswan University to equip students and faculty with the skills necessary for success in the energy and sustainability industries. As part of this initiative, COEE has allocated $4 million to fund research projects led by faculty members.
Supporting Scientific Research for Renewable Energy Innovation
Mustafa Marei, a Professor of Electrical and Mechanical Energy at Ain Shams University and Technical Adviser to the COEE, emphasized the crucial link between renewable energy development and scientific research. Marei highlighted the importance of supporting innovation in this field to unlock new opportunities, particularly in the production of green hydrogen for export. He also stressed the need to lower energy production costs and improve energy consumption efficiency.
Government Support for Large-Scale Renewable Energy Projects
In this regard , the Egyptian cabinet recently approved the “Golden License” for Abydos for Renewable Energy’s photovoltaic power generation project in New Benban, Aswan Governorate. With an investment of $850 million, the project will generate 1,000 MW of electricity, supported by a 600 MW/h energy storage system. The project will offer about 4,000 jobs and further solidify Egypt’s position as a leader in renewable energy.
