Empowering Disability Advocacy: Al-Azhar Explores Women’s Role in Inclusive Support

Mona Yousef

The Advisor to Egypt’s  Minister of Social Solidarity for Disability Affairs, Maha Helali,  took part Monday in a high-level workshop hosted by Al-Azhar University to follow up on the recommendations of the university’s international conference, “Women in the Lives of Persons with Disabilities in Light of Egypt’s Vision 2030.” The original event was held on May 8, 2025.

Helali’s participation on behalf of the Ministry of Social Solidarity underscored the government’s ongoing commitment to empowering persons with disabilities—especially women, girls, and mothers of children with disabilities—through collaborative national efforts.

“The Ministry is fully committed to supporting initiatives that aim to empower women and girls with disabilities,” Helali said. “We believe that effective coordination between government, academia, and civil society is essential to developing a truly inclusive and comprehensive national vision.”

During her remarks, Helali stressed the need for holistic psychological, social, and educational support tailored to persons with disabilities, while also emphasizing the importance of integrating the specific challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities into awareness and rehabilitation programs.

She reaffirmed the Ministry’s readiness to provide technical assistance and facilitate coordination with relevant stakeholders to help translate the conference recommendations into actionable programs and initiatives that address the real needs of target groups.

The workshop brought together representatives from Al-Azhar University, various ministries, and key national councils including the National Council for Women, the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, alongside civil society organizations working in the disability sector.

The gathering reflects a broader national effort to strengthen inclusive policies and expand the social and economic integration of persons with disabilities in line with Egypt Vision 2030 and the country’s human rights agenda.
