Emigration Minister Follows Up on Egyptians Involved in Greece Migrant Boat Incident

News Agencies

On Saturday, Egypt’s Minister of State for Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates’ Affairs, Soha Gendi, stated that she is closely following the updates of the migrant boat disaster that capsized off the Greek coast in the Mediterranean in June 2023, leaving dozens of migrants of different nationalities dead and hundreds missing.

Only 42 migrants survived the incident. Eight Egyptians were detained over accusations of causing the illegal migration boat incident and forming a human trafficking gang.

Last Tuesday, a Greek court in Kalamata dropped charges against the Egyptian men accused of causing one of the Mediterranean’s deadliest shipwrecks. The court ruled it had no jurisdiction over the case because the disaster occurred in international waters.

Gendi stated that the Emigration Ministry is coordinating with the Foreign Ministry and the Egyptian ambassador in Athens regarding the developments and measures for releasing and defending the detained Egyptians. They also provide all the required documents for the case.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Emigration on Saturday, the minister emphasized that following up on the case is part of the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Egyptian expatriates worldwide.

Ambassador Gendi highlighted the strong and close relations between Egypt and Greece in all areas, particularly in cooperation to combat illegal migration and transform it into a safe and legal process to protect young people.
