In a meeting underscoring Egypt’s deepening role in humanitarian diplomacy, Minister of Social Solidarity and Vice President of the Egyptian Red Crescent, Dr. Maya Morsy, received Alfonso Pérez, outgoing Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Cairo. The meeting took place at the Ministry’s headquarters in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital.
The farewell encounter, attended by senior officials including Dr. Amal Emam, Executive Director of the Egyptian Red Crescent, and Dina El-Seirafy, Assistant Minister for International Cooperation and Agreements, highlighted the extensive collaboration between the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) and the ICRC—particularly during recent regional emergencies.
Strong Coordination During the Gaza Humanitarian Crisis
Minister Morsy praised Mr. Pérez for his leadership and recognized the critical role the ICRC played in supporting joint humanitarian operations, particularly in response to the devastating humanitarian situation in Gaza amid the ongoing conflict. She noted that the coordinated efforts between the ERC, ICRC, and relevant national and international partners significantly amplified Egypt’s capacity to deliver timely and effective humanitarian aid to those affected.
She emphasized the strategic role of the Egyptian Red Crescent as a humanitarian arm supporting national authorities, especially in cross-border emergencies and conflict zones, while underscoring the continued importance of supporting volunteers and institutionalizing volunteerism across the country.
Advancing Emergency Response Infrastructure
The Minister also highlighted the recent pilot launch of the Ministry’s Emergency and Public Safety Network Control Center at its New Administrative Capital headquarters. Developed in collaboration with the Signal Department of the Egyptian Armed Forces, the new system is aimed at enhancing the efficiency and responsiveness of Egypt’s emergency and relief services, bolstering public safety and crisis coordination.
ICRC Bids Farewell with Optimism and Gratitude
In his remarks, Alfonso Pérez expressed appreciation for the strong relationship between the ICRC and the Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity. He lauded the professionalism and dedication of the ERC and its network of volunteers, particularly in the face of complex humanitarian emergencies.
As Pérez prepares to assume a new role, both sides affirmed their commitment to continuing and deepening the collaboration between Egypt and the ICRC, especially in areas related to humanitarian aid, emergency relief, and resilience-building across the region.
