The Egyptian Parliament, chaired by Dr. Hanafy Gebali, has approved Presidential Decree No. 567 of 2024, authorizing the Green Egypt Skills Development Project for the creation of a climate-smart agricultural network in Egypt. This agreement, between the governments of Egypt and Canada, involves a grant worth CAD 9.9 million.
Objectives of the Agreement:
The initiative aims to enhance employment opportunities for youth of both genders in Egypt’s agricultural sector by boosting their capacity to acquire climate-smart skills relevant to the industry. The project will focus on three governorates in the Nile Delta: Beheira, Gharbia, and Menoufia. In addition to creating skilled workers for the sector, the project aims to support environmental sustainability efforts.
The Ministry of Education and Technical Education, the Ministry of Environment, and the National Council for Women will collaborate on the implementation of this initiative, marking a significant step towards sustainable development in the agricultural sector.
Criminal Procedure Code Amendments Approved:
In the same parliamentary session, members also approved several provisions in the new draft of the Criminal Procedure Code. The amendments, which align with Egypt’s 2014 Constitution and national human rights strategy, include empowering the Public Prosecution to issue orders for monitoring communications, including social media accounts, emails, and mobile phones, with a court’s prior written consent. These orders will be limited to a maximum period of 30 days, with the possibility of renewal for similar periods.
These changes are aimed at modernizing the judicial process to keep pace with technological advancements, and ensuring that Egypt’s criminal procedure remains effective while respecting citizens’ rights.
This approval represents Egypt’s continued efforts to modernize its legal and economic systems in line with international standards, while addressing emerging environmental and technological challenges.
