Egypt’s Ministry of Local Development Strengthens Population Management with Comprehensive Approach to Improve Citizens’ Quality of Life

Mona Yousef

Minister of Local Development, Dr. Manal Awad, today reviewed the Central Population Unit’s report for January 2025, outlining key initiatives and progress in managing the country’s demographic growth. These efforts align with Egypt’s broader goals of stabilizing population growth rates and improving citizens’ quality of life, as mandated by the nation’s leadership.

The Ministry’s approach has been to tackle the issue from a multifaceted perspective, focusing on enhancing the health, social, familial, and economic conditions of citizens. This includes leveraging technology and data-driven strategies to drive efficient communication and engage all segments of the population effectively.

Dr. Awad emphasized the critical role of the Central Population Unit in working closely with local population units across Egypt’s governorates. A key highlight of January’s efforts included a high-level field visit to Luxor Governorate, where the Ministry introduced several recommendations to strengthen the region’s population management initiatives. During the visit, Dr. Awad also participated in the fourth edition of the Youth Conference 2024, organized by the Luxor population unit under the theme “Sustainability: Reality and Solutions,” underscoring the significance of youth-led innovation in tackling demographic challenges.

The Ministry’s initiatives include fostering digital transformation and building digital literacy among local youth, a crucial factor for empowering the next generation of innovators and leaders. Additionally, Dr. Awad commended the ongoing efforts to enhance coordination among key governorates, including Esna, Armant, Al-Qurna, and the village of Al-Baghadi, as part of a broader initiative to increase community involvement and provide essential technical support.

In line with these goals, the Central Population Unit conducted a specialized training session on strategic planning, executive planning, and community participation at the Local Development Center in Saqqara. This training, focused on building the capacities of population unit heads in various governorates, aims to equip local leaders with the tools needed to address critical population and social issues. Looking ahead, the Ministry has developed a comprehensive annual training plan for 2025-2026, which will focus on further developing the leadership skills of village, city, and neighborhood heads in managing population initiatives, in collaboration with key stakeholders.

The report also underscored the importance of the Spectrum program, which supports evidence-based decision-making by offering demographic, economic, and social projections. By enhancing the capacity of policymakers and decision-makers, Egypt aims to tackle population issues in a way that supports long-term economic and social sustainability.

Furthermore, Dr. Awad pointed to the importance of the Ministry’s collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population and local authorities to implement urgent interventions in areas identified through recent government meetings, including the December 2024 Cabinet and Governors’ Council discussions. The success of these initiatives, combined with the Ministry’s strategic approach, highlights Egypt’s commitment to addressing population growth as a central pillar of its development strategy for the coming decades.

With these comprehensive strategies in place, Egypt’s Ministry of Local Development is making significant strides in ensuring sustainable population management that prioritizes citizens’ well-being and fosters a more balanced, prosperous future for the nation.
