Egypt’s Mayar Sherif commenced her French Open campaign with a 2-0 (6-3, 6-1) victory against Madison Brengle of the United States in the first round of the Grand Slam competition on Sunday.
Sherif, World number 54, needed only 63 minutes to dispatch her opponent, who is ranked 95th.
In the next round, the 27-year-old will face on Wednesday Anastasia Potapova of Russia, who is ranked 25th in the world and advanced to the second round with a 2-0 (6-1, 6-2) victory over Taylor Townsend on Sunday.
Earlier this month, Sherif made a strong showing at the Madrid Open, where she reached the quarterfinals after impressive wins over No. 30 Camila Giorgi and No. 5 Caroline Garcia before falling to world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka.
The 27-year-old, who was born in Cairo, made history in 2020 when she became the first Egyptian woman to reach the first round of a Grand Slam, winning the first set of her debut match at the French Open before ultimately losing to number two seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic.
